注：當(dāng)年秀州中學(xué)辟城北草茅，開(kāi)浙西風(fēng)氣，率先接受西式教育，而她的學(xué)子也誠(chéng)如校歌所唱：“破天荒兮惟吾校。負(fù)笈如云集，竟業(yè)多鳳毛。”我們也可從當(dāng)年秀州學(xué)生的英語(yǔ)作文略窺秀州的教育水平。中文翻譯附在最后。

Our school ——Kashing High School was established in the year 1900 by the Southern Presbyterian Church of America. Its aim to train religious and intellectual leader for China.

The principal of our school is Mr. Davis who has lived in China for several years and knows very well the psychology and the needs of the Chinese people. The faculty of our school is composed of twenty-one teachers. Five of them are Americans and the others are Chinese. The total numbers of students enrolled this term is 289.

The students of our school are very active and patriotic. Everyone likes to serve others instead of being served. We also cultivate the spirit of self-control and self-respect.

There are three organizations in our school . The most famous one is the “School City ” The School City is divided into three branches —legislative executive and judicial. under the executive branch there is a special committee who helps to manage the kitchen and dining room. There is also the Board of Health which has charge of the sanitation of the dormitories and the health of the students. We have done a great deal to prevent an unsightly appearance by forbidding students to throw paper or to spit on the floor.

We also have the Patriotic Society. The students like very much to buy Chinese goods. If a student buys Japanese goods， others will despise him and consider him a traitor. Sometimes we go on the streets to tell the people about the present condition of China and stir up their patriotism. The patriotic society has established a night school for the poor boys or men who have no chance to study.

The other organization is the Y.M.C.A. It is divided into five department —spiritual ，intellectual ,physical, social service ,and business. The business department runs a bookstore, a barber shop, and a grocery shop. The Y.M.C.A. has also established many Sunday schools in Kashing city.

Besides these, the students of our school are given much guidance and stimulus in athletic, religious, and literary activities. A Bulletin Board Magazine is published weekly by the students. At Christmas each grammar school grade had printed a small class paper, copies of which were presented to the guests at the various entertainments.

From the founding of our school up to the present there have been about one thousand students and seventy-one graduates. Except a few who have died most of them are engaged in various professions and some are still studying in universities. A few alumni association has been organized recently.

In a word, under the wise management of the principal and the faculty and through the enthusiasm of the students our school has become famous, and we hope it will be still more famous as the years go by.

附上中文翻譯：我們學(xué)校——秀州中學(xué)是由美國(guó)南方長(zhǎng)老會(huì)于1900年創(chuàng)辦的。它的目標(biāo)是為中國(guó)培養(yǎng)宗教和知識(shí)分子領(lǐng)袖。

我們學(xué)校的校長(zhǎng)是竇維思先生，他在中國(guó)生活了幾年，非常了解中國(guó)人的心理和需求。我們學(xué)校的教職員工有21名，其中5名是美國(guó)人，其他的是中國(guó)人。本學(xué)期招收的學(xué)生總數(shù)為289人。

我們學(xué)校的學(xué)生都很積極和愛(ài)國(guó)，每個(gè)人都喜歡為別人服務(wù)，而不是被服務(wù)。我們還培養(yǎng)了自我控制和自尊的精神。

我們學(xué)校有三個(gè)組織，其中最有名的是“學(xué)校市”。學(xué)校市分為立法、行政和司法三個(gè)部門，行政部門之下有一個(gè)專門委員會(huì)協(xié)助管理廚房和餐廳，還有一個(gè)衛(wèi)生委員會(huì)，負(fù)責(zé)宿舍的衛(wèi)生和學(xué)生的健康。我們做了很多工作來(lái)防止學(xué)生難看的外表，禁止學(xué)生亂扔紙張或隨地吐痰。

我們還有愛(ài)國(guó)會(huì)，學(xué)生很喜歡買中國(guó)貨，如果一個(gè)學(xué)生買日貨，別人會(huì)鄙視他，認(rèn)為他是賣國(guó)賊；有時(shí)我們上街向人們介紹中國(guó)的現(xiàn)狀，激起他們的愛(ài)國(guó)情懷；愛(ài)國(guó)會(huì)為沒(méi)有機(jī)會(huì)讀書(shū)的窮孩子或窮男人辦了一所夜校。

另一個(gè)組織是基督教青年會(huì)，它分為精神、智力、身體、社會(huì)服務(wù)和商業(yè)五個(gè)部門，商業(yè)部經(jīng)營(yíng)書(shū)店、理發(fā)店和雜貨店，基督教青年會(huì)還在嘉興市建立了許多主日學(xué)校。

除此之外，我們學(xué)校的學(xué)生在體育、宗教和文學(xué)活動(dòng)方面都得到了很大的指導(dǎo)和激勵(lì)，學(xué)生們每周出版一本“公告牌”雜志，圣誕節(jié)時(shí)，文法學(xué)校的每個(gè)年級(jí)都印制了一份小班報(bào)，并在各種娛樂(lè)活動(dòng)中贈(zèng)送給來(lái)賓。

我校從建校到現(xiàn)在，在校生一千人左右，畢業(yè)生七十一人左右，除少數(shù)人去世外，大多數(shù)從事各種職業(yè)，也有一部分人還在讀大學(xué)。最近成立了幾個(gè)校友會(huì)。

總之，在校長(zhǎng)和教職員工的英明管理下，通過(guò)學(xué)生的熱情，我們的學(xué)校已經(jīng)出名了，我們希望它會(huì)隨著時(shí)間的推移而更加出名。
